“Red Phone Line” between NATO Command and Russia has been re-established

German Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeutung reported on May 3 that NATO Command will re-establish “Hot Phone Line” between Russia and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Details are not disclosed but Russian counterparts were provided with a specific number to communicate directly with NATO Command.

The initiative of the “hot line” re-activation belongs to German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier (Frank-Walter Steinmeier). Because of the rising tensions between Russia and NATO in connection with the Ukrainian crisis, German Foreign Minister proposed to establish a direct link between the NATO and Russian military command, which is deemed necessary in the event of the crisis escalation.

During the Cold War direct link via teletype was established between leadership of the USSR and the USA in the wake of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. This link was called the “red phone”, and since then remains one if the most infamous symbols of the Cold War.
